A road winding through the Midlands

So you’ve picked up the keys to your motorhome and as you hit the open road, endless opportunities await you. But where to head first? There are many interesting places to see that are close to our base in Stoke Golding, Leicestershire, so below we’ve put together a few notable local towns with attractions that are well worth going to visit:

Market Bosworth

Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Country Park

If it’s history and scenery that you’re looking for, you’ll be hard pressed to find anywhere more fitting than Market Bosworth. This pretty town is home to gorgeous thatched houses, cosy old pubs and one of the most important sites in English history!

Close to the town is a very important location from ‘The War of the Roses’, an English civil war that was fought between the houses of Lancaster and York. This 30 year long war ended in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth Field when Lancastrian Henry Tudor defeated the Yorkist king Richard III.

Learn much more about the battle at Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and Country Park. Here you’ll get a glimpse of the battle’s history with an award winning exhibition, guided walks and reenactments. If you’re looking to stretch your legs, why not take a walk along the 1.25 mile Battlefield Trail with stunning views out over the Leicestershire countryside. The heritage centre is around a 10  minute drive from Market Bosworth.

Just five minutes drive away from our base is the home of famed motorcycle manufacturer Triumph. If you’re a petrolhead, then the Triumph Factory Visitor Experience is surely a must-visit ,with an immersive experience where you’ll see how these motorcycles are made and get up close to some of the finest Triumph motorcycles from across the decades. You’ll learn about the history of the company, see bikes that have featured in popular films and get to know more about the racing legends who have helped to make this brand an integral part of motorcycle folklore.

If you’re partial to a cream tea (who isn’t!), then head to Whitemoors Antiques and Crafts Centre. Located on Mill Lane in Shenton, half way between Dadlington and Market Bosworth, this quaint little place includes a group of restored buildings that date back centuries.

Once inside you can have a look around their galleries, which contain a wonderful selection of antiques, books, crafts and more. Wander through their landscaped gardens and once you’ve worked up an appetite, enjoy a scrumptious cream tea, or another of their homemade cakes, soups, baguettes or puddings.

Great Central Railway

A little further afield, Loughborough is about 40 minutes drive from our base. This market town is famous for it’s world-class university, but that’s not all! Located on the outskirts of Loughborough is the Great Central Railway, which is the only mainline heritage railway in the UK.

Take a step back in time aboard a full-size steam locomotive as it travels from Loughborough. You’ll see the sights and sounds of leicestershire roll by as you stop at Quorn & Woodhouse and Rothley stations, before arriving to the north of Leicester. Back at Loughborough station, take time to visit the fascinating museum and have a bite to eat at the buffet.

Twycross Zoo

A trip to the zoo is always fun for kids and adults alike! Twycross Zoo is a conservartion centre that is home to more than 500 animals, including endangered species and the UK’s only group of bonobos. Familiar favourites are here including giraffes, flamingoes and meerkats, plus rarer creatures including snow leopards, kangaroos and the world’s rarest big cat, the Amur leopard.

Make lots of magical memories with your family as you wander through the Butterfly Forest, watch Humboldt Penguins on their daily march and visit the walk-through ring-tailed Lemur enclosure.

The zoo is around a 20-25 minute drive from us.
